Assignment #4 Integrated Technology
Using or integrating technology at the post-secondary level should be a regularly occuring practice; or atleast one might think it is. Truth be known, it doesn't happen as often as it should; even at our Technical Colleges. Unless self-conscious instructors take the time to purposefully integrate technology, it just doesn't happen. Here are some examples of good technology integration.
  1. www.wisc-online.com Use of Learning Objects in Technical Courses to teach course material. Secondary or Post-secondary level.
    • Learning Objects are simple lessons or blocks of information that are electronically built on the internet.
    • They are designed and scripted by a subject matter expert (often a technical college instructor) then created electronically by a system technician.
    • Many are interactive in nature.
    • Can be used during lecture as a group presentation, or can be put up as a link in course delivery systems (I use Blackboard).
    • Here is an example http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objID=AMT2104 This particular lesson is on Testing a Diode.
  2. www.wisc-online.com Use of Learning Objects in Technical Courses to teach equipment usage. Secondary or Post-secondary level.
    • Learning Objects can be built to demonstrate a particular piece of equipment.
    • Students can access the learning object via a link in an instructor's web page, wiki, blog, or course delivery system such as Blackboard.
    • Students can use the learning object as often as necessary to become familiar with the particular process or piece of equipment.
    • Can be used as homework, or in a lab environment as instruction or remediation.
    • Here is an example http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objID=AMT1904 This lesson is on Battery Testing using a VAT- 40.
  3. Autoshop 101 as part of Automotive Technology Courses. Secondary or Post-secondary level.
    • Kevin Sullivan's Autoshop 101 is a free site containing electrical & electronics lessons in automotive technology with great visuals and resources.
    • Can be applied to several different lessons in the electrical subject area.
    • Used primarily as a resource in the classroom; lecture material.

Assignment # 5 Blogs
My blog site:
http://106025gmasep.blogspot.com/ Establishing a blog was extremely easy... now what do I do with it?

Articles on educational blogs:
http://blog.classroomteacher.ca/5/how-to-start-an-educational-blog/
Very informative web article describing 4 different platforms that could be used to support a class blog or edublog. Pros and cons of each are listed. Seems like Blogger is a very accomodating option to creating a blog.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/19/technology/circuits/19blog.html?pagewanted%EF%BF%BD11%EF%BF%BD2
Good article, a bit dated, but still relative. Jeffery Selingo of the Times does a nice job of describing how some blogs are being used in classrooms.

http://web20intheclassroom.blogspot.com/2008/10/ways-to-use-blogs-in-your-classroom-and.html
Another good article on different ways a blog could be utilized. Concise and to the point.

http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/techtorial/techtorial037print.shtml
The author presents her article in a techtorial format... very informative in nature, like a tutorial; but techy. She covers the major points like what are blogs, examples of blogs, how to start a blog, best practices, things to do and consider, and steps to take in teaching blogging.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2318008_use-blog-college-classroom.html
Very brief article on appropriate uses of blogs in college classrooms. I especially liked the last couple of lines that included "a blog is just a learning tool." I think it would be easy at the post-secondary level to rely too heavily on tools like blogs.
